Performing The Tests

    • Assessment of peripheral (non-foveal) achromatic vision
    • Complements testing of visual acuity, which assesses central (foveal) achromatic vision ( See Visual Acuity )
    • Perform the Amsler Grid test to screen for small defects near fixation
    • Trap: because the Amsler Grid test requires patients to outline their own visual field defects, they must see them distinctly enough to mark the defects; also, remember that this test is limited to detecting defects within 10 degrees of fixation
    • Perform confrontation visual field testing to screen for large defects
    • Trap: confrontation visual field testing detects only dense hemianopias and altitudinal defects
    • Perform bowl perimetry, the most sensitive method to detect visual field defects
    • Trap: as sensitive as bowl perimetry is, it requires patient attention and cooperation—which are often missing!
